HBO’s True Detective: Night Country fourth season was a total success when it was released on HBO in January. It was one of the most-viewed shows on the cable channel since its first installment was released ten years prior. After these stellar results, it’s not surprise that the show was renewed for a fifth season, and the showrunner Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid, Secondary Effects, True Detective) is working on the future storylines for this series, Comicbook.com reports.
According to Comicbook.com, during an exclusive interview on a Deadline TV Contenders panel to promote the series’ success, López was asked if there is future storyline still for Ennis for season five, the town where Night Country is placed. “It might, or not, be connected to Ennis,” López explained, very coyly. “We will see.”
The fifth season of True Detective, according to Comicbook.com, seems to have different storyline in a different town, just like the previous seasons were. Something important is the future of Night Country‘s main characters, which seems to be very mysterious and not clear. Navarro, the character portrayed by Kali Reis (True Detective, True Detective FREE, Catch the Fair One), seemed to have an ambiguous future. At the end of the fourth season, she was walking in the forest when everything came crashing down. What’s mysterious is that she appeared next to Danvers, the character played by Jodie Foster (True Detective, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, Gunsmoke), a few seconds before the episode ended. This was something that led fans to create thousands of theories surrounding that creative decision. López spoke to Deadline in an exclusive interview after the finale aired, explaining if the character of Navarro is truly alive or not.
“I’m not saying that she’s alive, and I’m certainly not saying that she’s dead,” López explained, via Comicbook.com. “I very carefully crafted this as an ink blot test for you to discover yourself as an audience member. I do love that Navarro states very early in the series that she has this impulse to just walk away and leave everything behind. On the other hand, the entire series is an exploration of the fact that she feels a calling to the beyond.
“In the climax of the finale, and instead of fighting it and going in with pain and fear, she surrenders to it.” López added, via Comicbook.com. “And in doing it, she receives a piece of herself. So that call that she was afraid of is solved. The Aboriginal people in Australia go and walk about, find themselves and then come back, which I think is what Kali [Reis] embraced [for the character]. However, there is a chance that she is also going to be with the women before her visit to them. You can read it both ways and it’s up to you to interpret which one fulfills your heart.”
