Irvine Welsh Considers ‘Trainspotting’ Spinoff

The stories in Trainspotting have stuck with us for quite some time–and might stay with us a little longer.

The Danny Boyle-directed cult classic debuted in 1996, and followed the story of a group of heroin addicts in 1980s’ era Edinburgh. The film starred Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, and Ewen Bremner, and its screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award.

Twenty years later, audiences all over the world prepare for T2 Trainspotting, a sequel that reunites the cast and director once again. Irvine Welsh, the author behind Porno (which Trainspotting was based on), followed along with the cast for the subsequent press tour.

Indiewire reports that after being asked if we would see further adaptions from the characters, Irvine replied, “Basically, I’ve plans for them all. All in various kind of schedules or adaptations. It’s all ruling on cable TV, cable TV has some interesting developments. We’re working on all these different kind of things.”

But don’t think of this as Irvine capitalizing on trends. Irvine also noted, “I think now anybody who’s in the book, whether they like it or not, they’re working on the way of being in the film. You keep that in mind. As soon as you’ve written it, you’re thinking about how it can move into different mediums.”

While no news of a TV spinoff has been corroborated by any studios, the hype for Trainspotting has only just begun. T2 Trainspotting will hit US theaters on March 3.
