The spinoff of CBS’ popular legal drama The Good Wife is gaining another familiar face. Gary Cole, who played Kurt McVeigh, will be returning for the spinoff, which is entitled The Good Fight, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The last time viewers saw Cole’s character was in the series finale of the show when he was on the stand. Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) asked him if he’d been having an affair. Viewers didn’t get to see Kurt’s answer, but they do know that Diane (Christine Baranski), Kurt’s wife, was upset that Alicia (Julianna Margulies) had Lucca ask the question and slapped her in the final moments of the finale.
Cole appeared in 14 episodes of The Good Wife during its seven season run that just wrapped up in May 2016. He was introduced as a ballistics expert and quickly caught the eye of Diane. Despite their differing political ideologies, the two fell in love and got married in the fifth season of the show.
Now that it’s getting closer to the premiere of The Good Fight, some plot details are starting to be released. The show, which takes place a year after the finale of The Good Wife, features a large scale financial scam that ruins the reputation of Maia (Rose Leslie), Diane’s goddaughter, while also wiping out Diane’s savings.
Diane then goes to work at an emerging law firm with Lucca to try and rebuild her savings and her name.
The show will feature the return of Sarah Steele, who played Marissa Gold in the original show. Bernadette Peters has also joined the cast and she’ll play Maia’s mother. Other actors who have been cast in the show include Delroy Lindo, Erica Tazel and Paul Guilfoyle.
Cole has had an expansive acting career, including roles on Veep, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Pineapple Express and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. He has a guest-starring role on an upcoming episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, where he’ll play a Donald Trump-esque character plagued by sexual assault claims. The episode has been yanked from NBC’s schedule multiple times and is likely to air sometime in 2017.
The Good Fight will air its first episode on CBS in February before transitioning to CBS All Access for the remaining episodes. The first season will have 10 episodes.
