Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Continues with the New Season 3 Trailer

Earlier this week, Hulu dropped the third season trailer for its flagship series, The Handmaid’s Tale. The dystopian Emmy award winning drama premiered in April, 2017, and is based on Margaret Atwood’s bestselling novel by the same name.

The show follows Offred (Elizabeth Moss), a woman who must survive Gilead. This is a world of declining fertility rates, rampant sexually transmitted diseases, and pollution, all while an extremist, totalitarian government assumes political control. In this state, the few fertile women left, “handmaids,” are divided up amongst the ruling elite. Behind closed doors, they are forced to conceive and bare children for such men and their wives.

Albeit its troubling subject matter, Seasons 1 and 2 were both met with critical acclaim. While only time will tell whether or not Season 3 will be greeted similarly, the trailer promises an eventful continuation of an already tension-saturated franchise. As summarized by CNN, Season 2 concluded with Offred’s failed attempt to escape to Canada with her newborn child. Now it seems the plot is pivoting in a new direction: revolution.

Partway through, the trailer reads, “This June, witness the birth of a revolution.” These words are paired with striking imagery, Offred is shown forming powerful alliances. The trailer even hints at an alliance between Moss’s character and Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski), a supporter of Gilead and the wife of Offred’s cruel master, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).

Tune into Hulu on June 5 to see how Season 3 unfolds.
