Hulu Orders ‘Mid-Century Modern Pilot’ From Ryan Murphy

According to Deadline, Hulu has ordered a pilot from new comedy series Mid-Century Modern. Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Pose) is set to produce.

As reported by Deadline, the new queer sitcom is co-created by Will & Grace duo and lifelong collaborators Max Mutchnick (Boston Common, Good Morning, Miami) and David Kohan (Clipped, Partners). The new Hulu sitcom is not the first queer project by either activist and uber-producer Murphy or Mutchnick, both of whom are openly gay. Murphy’s work, ranging from Glee to Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, has helped launched a litany of queer talent into mainstream success including Emmy award-nominated actress Mj Rodriguez (Pose, American Horror Story: Delicate), who became the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an Emmy award in a major acting category in 2021 for her work in Pose, and Emmy award-nominated actor Chris Colfer (Glee, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie).

Mid-Century Modern follows a group of middle aged queer best friends as they navigate the triumphs and pitfalls associated with reaching their golden years, as noted by Deadline. Nathan Lane (The Producers, Beau is Afraid) is set to lead the series as Bunny Schneidermann, a wealthy successful businessman living in Palm Springs as he nears retirement while simultaneously navigating his stale love life. Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers, American Horror Story) co-stars as Jerry Frank, a former Mormon who left the church and his wife after realizing that he is gay. Linda Lavin joins the supporting cast as Sybil Schneidermann, Bunny’s mother, with whom he lives, who shares a loving relationship with her son despite her meticulous and iconoclastic nature.

This is not Bomer’s first time collaborating with Murphy. He first appeared in the fourth season of the anthology series American Horror Story, entitled Freak Show, in a supporting role. The following year he then joined the main cast in American Horror Story: Hotel. He has also appeared in the American Horror Story spin-offs American Crime Story and American Horror Stories in both supporting and leading roles.

While further details surrounding Mid-Century Modern are currently undisclosed, viewers can expect more news to come as the series wraps production.
