Season 2 of Netflix’s The Witcher will return to production August 17. The announcement came in a tweet Monday morning, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The announced date came later than expected as the U.K. permitted high-end productions like The Witcher to return to filming in May. The production was halted less than a month into filming, leaving a majority of season 2 unfilmed yet and a prediction that season 2 might not hit the streaming platform until summer or fall 2021, via EW.
The Polish American fantasy drama series, The Witcher, is based on the novel series under the same name, written by Andrzej Sapkowski. The first season is based on short story collections, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, that precede the main Witcher premise. The collections are both written by Sapkowski.
Produced by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (The Umbrella Academy), the first season of The Witcher premiered in its entirety to Netflix on December 20, 2019. With eight, hour-long episodes, the show’s description is: “Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts,” via Netflix.
The cast includes Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) as Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan (Bluebird) as Princess Ciri and Anya Chalotra (Sherwood) as Yennefer. Cavill, Allan and Chalotra are the three main characters who are provided with their own perspective in season 1 until the timeline unifies all three characters into one narrative.
Supporting cast includes Mimi Ndiweni (Black Earth Rising) as Fringilla, Mecia Simson (Britain’s Next Top Model) as Francesca and Eamon Farren (Chained) as Cahir.
Although S2 of The Witcher may not return to screens quickly, the first season can be streamed on Netflix. The trailer for season can also be seen below:
