HBO’s Series Finale of ‘Veep’ Will Wrap Up 2020 Presidential Election with the Fate of Julia-Louis Dreyfus’s Selina Meyer in the Hands of China

For seven years, Veep has provided an intelligent comedic take on politics in their own world that is, no doubt, based on our real-life political landscape. The Julia Louis-Dreyfus-led comedy kept viewers entertained with its outrageous shenanigans and over-the-top characters all the while subtly poking fun at politics. Now the Emmy award-winning series will showcase one last episode for its series finale on Sunday.

In season seven, Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is currently a candidate in the 2020 Presidential election. After a misunderstanding, Meyer finds herself making a difficult deal with Lu (Tzi Ma), the President of China. The Chinese will rig the election for Selina to become President, but only if she gives Tibet back to the Chinese once she has won.

Veep showrunner David Mandel knows the conclusion could divide viewers, but is still satisfied with the outcome.

“I’m just excited. I have no doubt many people will love it,” said Mandel. “I also have no doubt many people will hate it. Here’s what I know: I’m very happy with it. Julia’s very happy with it. The end.”

The series finale will have a running time of 45 minutes. As to what clues fans can find in episodes before the finale, Mandel says there’s many to look out for in previous episodes.

“While some of the episodes did start to get a little longer and you got some added content — you may have noticed as they started to creep up that they were all a little thicker and bigger — it is six episodes,” said Mandel. “Rewatch them again. All the answers are in the six episodes, whether you know it or not!”

Louis-Dreyfus wants Veep to become a timeless comedy which is not something that the actress is a stranger to, having found that with her old sitcom, Seinfeld.

“I hope Veep’s legacy is that it remains a very funny show forever,” said Louis-Dreyfus. “I hope it doesn’t end up dating itself or somehow lose its comedic shine. That’s my desire.

Tune in to the series finale on Sunday, May 12 on HBO to find out if Selina Meyer wins the 2020 Presidential election.
