HBO’s Emmy-winning comedy series Girls, created by and starring Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture, Catherine Called Birdy, Too Much), will return for five-episode limited run. According to HBO’s Press Release, production on the new episodes is set to begin in 2027, 10 years after the show’s season six finale.
Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah alongside returning cast members Allison Williams (Get Out, M3GAN, Fellow Travelers) as Marnie, Jemima Kirke (Sex Education, Conversations with Friends, Untogether) as Jessa, Zosia Mamet (The Flight Attendant, The Decameron, Madame Web) as Shoshanna and Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon, Black Monday, A Simple Favor) as Elijah.
The original series followed the lives of its central characters through their twenties. The new episodes will revisit the group years later, with HBO Executive Vice President and Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Programming Amy Gravitt saying the revival will shift Dunham’s focus from “the tumult of one’s twenties” to the milestone of turning 40.
Dunham said the team had always planned to return to Girls only if there was a specific story they wanted to tell. She explained that she had struggled to imagine the characters in the present day before inspiration for their return emerged around her 40th birthday.
“We always said we would only return to GIRLS if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” Dunham said. “I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day.”
Dunham created the original series and will write and direct the upcoming episodes. She will also executive produce alongside Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, This Is 40), Ilene S. Landress (The Sopranos, Quiz Show, The Nevers) and Michael P. Cohen (Too much, Catherine Called Birdy, Treasure). Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells will serve as co-executive producers.
Across its original six-season run, Girls received 19 Emmy nominations and won two awards, including Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series.
Additional details, including a premiere date for the new Girls episodes, have not yet been announced.
