Review: ‘Get Jiro’ Season 1, Episode 3 “The Ortolan”

Episode 3 starts with Jiro teaching Pam how to make sushi, when Bob suddenly walks in and speaks with him about his mentor, who wanted him to make his dishes perfect, which taught him his limits. He then tells Jiro that because he proved his loyalty, he is opening a food hall in the middle ring, and he wants him to headline it. Jiro says he just wants to focus on his restaurant, but Bob says that he had his men look into his operation. The quality fish he buys and the low prices he serves his sushi is not sustainable, giving him maybe 8-10 months tops. If he expands, he can get wealthy customers. Jiro eventually volunteers his services, and with that, Bob heads off.

The next day, Bob brings some acquaintances to the food hall, where Jiro gives some of his food to them, which they find exquisite. The detective (named Cynda) tries to get in, but is of course shooed away, only for a baker to be allowed in, who was actually hired by Rose to assassinate Bob and Jiro. She makes her way to a vantage point and shoots at Bob, who is saved by his caviar tin. Jiro then heads up the stairs and after the baker, but she manages to get away.

After Cynda shares her findings with the commissioner, Bob caramelizes the bodyguard who let the baker in, and gets pissed off. He starts saying that his investors are pulling out and the city is hard lining him on permits, all because of his conflict with Rose. Jiro then proposes that he cook and serve them a dish so perfect, that they’ll forget all about Rose and be won back, a meal known as Ortolan, which was actually banned. Jiro says he knows how to get it, so he goes and learns how to make the dish.

He then serves the Ortolan to everyone, while the assassin attempts her kill once again. She is stopped by Bob, and the two have a fight.  After the struggle, Bob manages to overpower her and throws her off the building, just as Jiro heads over. After talking with Jiro, the two head back to the guests, where they all have had their heads chopped off, with “now meat truly is murder” written in their blood on the table, hinting it may be Rose. Jiro offers his knife to be killed by Bob for failing, but Bob is sympathetic, saying he still needs him because they’re about to go to war.

When Jiro heads home, Pam is there waiting, where expresses her anger for Jiro working with Bob. Jiro then explains to her about how he had a moment to kill Bob, but he resisted, because to bake a perfect dessert you need patience. Jiro was the one who killed the guests and wrote the message, in order to start a war between Bob and Rose.

This so far might have been one of the better episodes. It seems like more tension is starting to kick in, though of course it’s not that tense. Especially with the creme brulee death, and Bob pushing a cheese grater against his mentor’s face (which is actually pretty brutal if you think about it), but these of course add to the show a lot, and make it even more enjoyable the different ways these people are getting killed. It’s so far still not that bad of a show, and the episodes still bring a level of interest to see how the story will play out.

I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
