The critically acclaimed comedy Insecure from creator Issa Rae has received an April 12th release date from HBO. The news was announced at the Television Critics Association this morning, and a new trailer for the upcoming season was revealed.
The TCA panel where the news was announced featured Rae, who also stars in the show, as well as fellow cast members Yvonne Orji and Jay Ellis, and writer/director/executive producer Prentice Penny. Before getting into the details of the upcoming season of Insecure, Rae commented on her presentation of this year’s Oscar nominees alongside John Cho earlier this week. During the presentation of the Best Director nominees, Rae called attention to the lack of female nominees, saying, “Congratulations to all those men.” The Oscars are not the only awards to suffer from lack of female nominees; the Golden Globes and the BAFTA Awards this year have been criticised for similar issues. At today’s panel, Rae expressed her frustration with the nomination trends among the Academy: “The Academy needs to do better,” she stated. “I just don’t want to get too worked up about it. It is what it is at this point. It’s annoying.”
Rae and her team then began teasing new details for the upcoming season of Insecure. The new season will apparently focus on new themes of change, with Rae stating the season will show “the fallout that happens when turning 30.” Viewers will be seeing the characters entering a new phase of life, with Orji’s character entering a new relationship, Ellis’s character making some significant changes in his life, and Rae’s character quitting her job to work on her passion project. The panel members did not reveal whether the fourth season of Insecure would be the show’s last. Rae commented that they had discussed a potential ending for the show, but did not give any further details.
