HBO Renews ‘Insecure’ for Season 5

The HBO comedy series Insecure has been renewed for a fifth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Created by Issa Rae (The Choir) and Larry Wilmore (The Daily Show), the series premiered in 2016 and is currently in the midst of its fourth season run. The program has received critical acclaim with garnering nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. The comedy is executive produced by its showrunner Rae, Dave Becky (Master of None), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Prentice Penny (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and Michael Rotenberg (King of the Hill).

Insecure is based on Rae’s web program, Awkward Black Girl, as it follows the lives of two college best friends Issa and Molly as they experience their 20s together in Los Angeles. Rae stars as Issa with Yvonne Orji (Night School) portraying Molly. The additional cast includes Jay Ellis (The Game), Natasha Rothwell (Saturday Night Live), and Amanda Seales (Black-ish). This series is the second HBO program to be produced by Rae which is A Black Lady Sketch Show

The partnership between network and creator has witnessed the renewal for Insecure and the second season for the aforementioned sketch series, as well as the future series Tre Cnt starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle). Insecure is currently set to air its fourth episode in its fourth season on Sunday, May 3 with the season concluding its ten-episode season on June 14.
