Good and bad news comes at the top of the week for Big Little Lies fans, as it looks like Nicole Kidman has found another HBO series. The trailer for the upcoming series The Undoing dropped Sunday, showcasing the talents of creators David. E. Kelley and director Susanne Bier, alongside acting chops from Hugh Grant and Kidman in leading roles.
The limited series reunites Kelley and Kidman, however, who worked together on Big Little Lies from 2016 and 2019. Kelley served as the writer for both seasons of the hit HBO show, while Kidman received rave reviews for her performance as housewife and domestic abuse victim Celeste Wright. The Undoing shares a major trait with Lies, being based on based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s 2014 book You Should Have Known.
The series will depict Grace (Kidman), a therapist in New York City seemingly living The American Dream with her husband, Jonathan (Grant), and son Henry (Noah Jupe of Honey Boy and Ford v. Ferrari fame). However, her idyllic life soon unravels to include “a violent death, a missing husband, and, in the place of a man Grace thought she knew, only a chain of terrible revelations,” according to HBO’s description. “Left behind in the wake of a spreading and very public disaster, and horrified by the ways in which she has failed to heed her own advice, Grace must dismantle one life and create another for her child and herself.”
Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games), Edgar Ramirez (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story), Ismael Cruz Cordova (Ray Donovan), Matilda De Angelis, Lily Rabe (American Horror Story), Noma Dumezweni (the upcoming HBO Max series Made for Love) and Sofie Gråbøl (the original Danish The Killing) will make up the supporting cast alongside Grant and Kidman.
Kidman will additionally serve as an executive producer on the show alongside Per Saari through production company Blossom Films. Emmy, Oscar and Golden Globe winner Bier will direct the limited series, which will air an undetermined amount of episodes.
