Netflix Renews ‘Lost in Space’ for Third and Final Season

The Netflix sci-fi drama, Lost in Space, has received a renewal for its third and final season, according to Deadline. Debuting in 2018, the series’ showrunner Zack Estrin (Prison Break) rebooted the 1965 television series of the same name, chronicling the adventures of the stranded Robinson family in outer space. Its’ cast includes Molly Parker (Deadwood and The Road) as Maureen Robinson, Toby Stephens (Die Another Day and Black Sails) as John Robinson, Maxwell Jenkins (Sense 8) as Will Robinson, Taylor Russel (Escape Room) as Judy Robinson, and Mina Sundwall (Freeheld) as Penny Robinson. Despite its short-run, Estrin intended for Lost in Space to be a trilogy of season arcs.

Alongside the announcement for the show’s conclusion, Netflix disclosed that Estrin recently signed an undisclosed multi-year deal to create and produce a new series for the streaming giant. This decision was bolstered by the instant success from Lost in Space, with the series amassing the third highest viewership on its premiere date for Netflix in 2018. Estrin first garnered national attention for his writing credits for Fox’s Prison Break, in addition to acting as an executive producer. Additionally, the showrunner was also the creator of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and The River. The new deal between Netflix and Estrin signifies an exciting future for more Netflix original series.

Although there is not a set date for the third season’s premiere, the expectations point towards 2021 due to a significant gap between the first two seasons’ releases. However, there is much anticipation from the series’ diehard fans regarding the future of their favorite intergalactic family. Currently, Lost in Space fans can acquire their Robinson Family fix on Netflix while newcomers to the series can begin binge-watching the first two seasons of the sci-fi remake.
