HBO Orders J.J. Abrams Sci-Fi Series ‘Demimonde’

In 2016, J.J. Abrams and HBO were responsible for one of the best television series of the year with Westworld. While Abrams only worked as executive producer on that series, Deadline reports that the filmmaker will be teaming up with the premium cable company yet again to write and direct his own show.

Last month it was reported that Abrams was shopping around a potential new television project, although the series was untitled and did not have a network yet. Now, it seems the show has a name and a home.

Titled Demimonde, the sci-fi centers on a family that suffers a tragedy after a violent car crash. After her mother winds up in a coma following the crash, the daughter in the family tries to help her family and when she finds herself transported to another land, is flung into a series of fantastical events.

Abrams’ creative plate is full of upcoming projects for the next year. In addition to serving as executive producer for Westworld season 2, Abrams is also working as executive producer on Jordan Peele’s TV series Lovecraft Country and on Hulu’s Stephen King series Castle Rock, whose first teaser trailer just dropped online this week. Abrams has also been named as the director for the final installment of Disney’s Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX.

Notably, Demimonde marks Abrams’ first return to television outside of a producing role since his two series Alias and Fringe.
