HBO Greenlights ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Sequel Series With Original Cast Members Set To Return

Eight years after the global box office hit Crazy Rich Asians release, fans of the movie will be excited to know that HBO has officially greenlit Crazy Rich Asians as an upcoming original HBO drama series. Production and filming for the series will begin in 2027.

This series will take place after the events of the original movie, a follow up to the film. Crazy Rich Asians is based on the book trilogy of the same name, written by best-selling author Kevin Kwan (Sex and Vanity, Lies and Weddings). The book series has sold over three million copies across U.S and Canada.

The Crazy Rich Asians movie is currently the highest grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy in North America, beating the movie The Proposal, which held the top spot for nearly a decade. Crazy Rich Asians grossed over 200 million globally and has over seventy award nominations.

Set to return from the original movie as series regulars include leading actress Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat, Hustlers) as Rachel Chu, with leading actor Henry Golding (A Simple Favor, The Gentlemen) as Nicholas Young, along with the supporting cast actress Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Tomorrow Never Dies) as Elanor Sung-Young and actor Ronny Chieng (Interior Chinatown, The Daily Show) as Edison Cheng.

The series will be co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television. The showrunner for the drama series includes Adele Lim (Joy Ride, Raya and the Last Dragon) from 100 Tigers production company, who is credited to have written the original Crazy Rich Asians movie. Jon M. Chu (Wicked, In the Heights) from Electric Somewhere production company, is set to direct the series, to which he also is credited to have directed the original movie. Chu is also executive producing the show, along with Kwan.

Nina Jacobson (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and Brad Simpson (World War Z, Pose) from Color Force, who originally developed and produced the film, will also produce the TV series along with Chloe Dan (This is My America, The Season) and Jeannie Tang (The Prototype, Black Cobra) of SK Global Entertainment, Rose Lam (The Last of Us, Schmigadoom!), and Naia Cucukov Richards (Finch, Legion), also from 100 Tigers.

The Crazy Rich Asians movie is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
