HBO Commits to J.J. Abrams & Jonathan Nolan ‘Westworld’ Remake

J.J. Abrams, Jonathan Nolan and Jerry Weintraub are teaming up for a series inspired by the 1973 movie “Westworld”, and HBO will be the home for the project, announced by Deadline.

Nolan will be directing the pilot episode of the remake, as well as writing the script along with Lisa Joy. Abrams and Weintraub will be producing the series, according to Indiewire.

Westworld, the series, has been described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” Warner Bros TV own the rights and have been attempting to produce the remake for years, offering it to the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tarsem Singh.

MGM’s original movie “Westworld” was based on the sci-fi novel written by Michael Crichton. It starred Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin. The movie was followed up by both a sequel, “Futureworld” and a continuation series Beyond Westworld.

While HBO has been extremely successful with fantasy genre series, they have not yet tackled the sci fi world. There have been no details released regarding the air date or any actors tied to the project as of yet.
