HBO Announces That ‘Barry’ Will End with Season Four

Today, HBO released the first look and teaser for season four of their dark comedy series Barry. Alongside this announcement, HBO also revealed that the release date for season four will be on April 16, and that this will be the final season of the show, via The Hollywood Reporter.

Barry is a dark comedy starring Bill Hader (Superbad, It Chapter Two) as a depressed, low-rent hitman from the Midwest. Lonely and dissatisfied in his life, he reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an aspiring actor. Barry follows them into an acting class and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the LA theater scene. The series, which already has three seasons under its belt, follows Barry as he balances his criminal past with his new life.

News of Barry’s conclusion comes as HBO this year will say farewell to both its Emmy-winning comedy as well as its Emmy-winning drama, Succession

In an interview with Variety, Hader talks about the ending of this beloved series that he not only stars in, but also serves as an executive producer on.  He says that as he wrote season four, himself and Alec Berg (EuroTrip, Shark Tale), who co-created the show with him, realized that “a very clear ending presented itself.” In this interview, Hader shares that even after coming up with the ending to the series, he debated over the fact that it was ending because himself and the team,”have such a good time doing it!” But Executive Vice President of HBO comedy programming Amy Gravitt says that she feels that the story comes to a natural end after the conclusion of season four, and she trusts Hader’s judgment, saying she “had to go with his gut on that” because Hader has been making strong decisions about the series since the beginning of its run.

Barry, the final season consisting of eight episodes, will debut April 16. The teaser trailer can be found here.
