HBO has revealed plans to make another new prequel show to spinoff of its wildly successful Game of Thrones series, according to ComicBook. This new series will revolve around the trilogy of novels called The Tales of Dunk and Egg written by the creator of The Game of Thrones Universe George R.R Martin himself. This will be the second prequel series HBO has slated for future production based off of this universe, the first is series titled House of The Dragon.
Both shows will feature characters from the legendary House Targaryen, House of The Dragon will take place 300 years prior to the timeline shown in Game of Thrones. “Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones,” according to HBO.
The Targaryen in Tales of Dunk and Egg will be none other than Aegon V Targaryen, the father of the Mad King. Aegon originally served as a squire for Ser Duncan The Tall when he was younger so suffice it to say the show will most likely take place in Aegon’s youth. These tales will be set 90 years before the events of game of Thrones and show fans the differences between the kings of another time period.
These prequel series will introduce fans to new characters to hate and love, with the incredible character development of Game of Thrones, they have some big shoes to fill. Ser Duncan The Tall is supposed to tower at approximately seven feet tall in the books and he also becomes an accomplished knight. Fans can compare his hulking size and fighting style to someone like The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, Pharaoh’s War) although Duncan was an orphan who grew up in Flea Bottom, it will be interesting to see how his character climbs the ranks of his peers and becomes a knight. Same can be said for Aegon as his character has a rich history as well, one day becoming a powerful king. Also considering that both prequel shows revolve around the Targaryen’s, the real question on fans minds would be, will there be any dragons?
With the news of this prequel just releasing, HBO has not set a production date yet but fans can expect to hear more in the coming months. Stay tuned and sharpen your valyrian steel swords because the Game of Thrones franchise has a bright future ahead of itself.
