Gwyneth Paltrow To Star In Netflix Thriller Series ‘The Apology’

Netflix has given a two-season straight-to-series order to The Apology, a new thriller drama starring Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love, Iron Man, The Talented Mr. Ripley). According to Deadline, the A24 series will mark Paltrow’s first leading television role and will be directed by Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round, The Hunt, Far from the Madding Crowd).

The Apology follows Evelyn, played by Paltrow, and Caleb Amspoker, a couple whose son was murdered 18 years earlier in a cold case that captured national attention. After nearly two decades without answers, a stranger suddenly appears and confesses to the murder, seemingly giving the couple an opportunity to finally receive justice for their son.

However, Evelyn and Caleb soon learn that the killer may receive a reduced sentence. Faced with the possibility that their son’s killer could avoid a harsher punishment, the couple decides to take matters into their own hands.

The series is written by Joe Murtagh (Say Nothing, The Woman in the Wall), who will also serve as showrunner and executive producer. Vinterberg and Paltrow will executive produce alongside Joe Hipps (Counterpart, House of Cards, Ozark) for Cut To.

Netflix reportedly acquired The Apology preemptively after the project generated competitive interest. The series comes from A24 and Cut To, which has previously landed straight-to-series orders for several projects with A-list talent attached.

Cut To’s upcoming projects with A24 include Discretion, starring Nicole Kidman (Practical Magic, Dogville, The Hours) and Elle Fanning (Super 8, Somewhere, The Neon Demon), at Paramount+, as well as Netflix’s Trigger Point, starring Joel Edgerton (The Gift, The Great Gatsby, The King). The company is also behind an upcoming Netflix espionage thriller starring Millie Bobby Brown (Enola Holmes, Stranger Things, The Electric State) and David Harbour (Hellboy, Stranger Things, Black Widow) and created by Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne (Wonder, National Treasure, Falling).

The Apology will mark Paltrow’s second series-regular television role following her supporting role on Netflix’s The Politician. She also previously appeared in a recurring role on Glee. More recently, Paltrow starred in Marty Supreme after spending much of the past several years focused on her Goop lifestyle brand.

Murtagh previously created the 2023 series The Woman in the Wall in addition to his work on Say Nothing. Vinterberg, meanwhile, is directing the first and final episodes of Netflix’s upcoming Kennedys, a series centered on the American political dynasty. The Apology will mark Vinterberg’s second U.S. television directing project following Kennedys.

Additional casting and a premiere date for The Apology have not yet been announced.
