Guy Ritchie Set To Direct And Write TV Adaptation Of Film ‘The Gentlemen’

A television series based on Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is in the works, via Deadline. The TV adaptation is set to be written and directed by Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes) with Ivan Atkinson (The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Aladdin) and Marn Davies (Five Eyes, Wrath of Man) attached as executive producers.

According to Deadline, the 2020 action comedy starred Matthew McConaughey (True Detective, Mud) as Mickey Pearson, an American who runs a London-based marijuana empire. When Pearson decides to enter retirement from the drug game, hijinks ensue as aspiring kingpins look to recoup on his turf. The film also starred Colin Farrell (The Batman, The Departed), Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, Monsoon), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, The Lost City of Z), Michelle Dockery (Defending Jacob, Downton Abbey), and Hugh Grant (The Undoing, Love Actually). Released in January, the movie – which was originally pitched for TV – grossed a worldwide total of $115M.

“Miramax Television is thrilled to break new creative ground in our partnership with Guy Ritchie on The Gentlemen,” Marc Helwig, Miramax’s new Head of Worldwide Television, said via Deadline. “One of the most distinctive and prolific filmmakers working today and someone whose creativity I have admired for many years, we couldn’t be more excited to bring the cinematic journey of The Gentlemen forth into the realm of global premium television,” Helwig stated via Deadline.

Deadline reports this is the second Miramax-produced film set for a TV adaptation as the company and Helwig work to develop many of the company’s film titles for television. The 1997 film Mimic is being eyed for a TV reboot with Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) set to direct and executive produce. Directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), Mimic starred Mira Sorvino (Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, Hollywood) as a biologist whose solution to an unprecedented plague of cockroaches in NYC mutates into a human-eating threat.
