‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Officially Renewed for Season 20 at ABC

Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed for season 20 at ABC. Meg Marinis (Grey’s Anatomy) has been announced to take over for Krista Vernoff (Shameless) as showrunner, via Variety.

With the announcement of this renewal, the series continues its run as the longest running primetime medical drama in TV history. The season 19 finale of Grey’s Anatomy will premiere on May 18. The show has seen a number of shocking exits this season, including showrunner Vernoff as well as Kelly McCreary (Castle) who played Dr. Maggie Pierce for nine seasons — and series titular character Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo. Pompeo has been with the show since it debuted, but in the Feb. 23 episode, her character Meredith Grey moved from Seattle to Boston.

She will continue to provide the voiceover at the beginning and end of each episodes, and she’ll also appear as guest star on the season finale. Pompeo’s status for season 20 is still up in the air. In a recent interview, via Deadline, she hinted that she might not be done playing Meredith Grey. With the showrunner change, the probability of her reprising her role in season 20 may increase.

Along with Pompeo, the Season 19 cast of Grey’s Anatomy also includes Chandra Wilson (Accidental Friendship), James Pickens, Jr. (Just Wright), Kevin McKidd (Made of Honor), Caterina Scorsone (The November Man), Camilla Luddington (Accidentally In Love), Kim Raver (Third Watch), Jake Borelli (The Thing About Harry), Chris Carmack (The O.C.) , Anthony Hill (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia). The cast welcomed many new additions to the show this season as well, including Alexis Floyd (The Bold Type), Harry Shum Jr. (Glee, Shadowhunters), Adelaide Kane (Reign, Once Upon A Time), Midori Francis (The Sex Lives of College Girls, Dash & Lily), Niko Terho (The Thing About Harry). Scott Speedman (Barefoot) returned this season after appearing in season 14 as a guest star before returning in season 18. Kate Walsh (Private Practice, Emily in Paris) also recurred as Dr. Addison Montgomery, with series alums Jesse Williams (Your Place or Mine) and Greg Germann (Friends From College) guest starring.
