George Clooney’s ‘Catch 22’ Adds Christopher Abbott

Hulu series Catch 22 has added Christopher Abbott (Girls) to the George Clooney produced project.

The Joseph Heller novel of the same name will be adapted as a six-part series on the streaming service. It was previously reported that Clooney would have a role in the series as Colonel Cathart. Abbott has been cast in the leading role of Capt. John Yossarian.

Catch 22 tells the story of World War II Air Force bombardier Yossarian. The novel gives his perspective of the perils soldiers endure in keeping their sanity throughout the stresses of war. The Catch 22 comes as his commanding officers become more of a threat to his sanity than the outrageous missions he completes.

Abbott’s previous TV roles included USA Network’s The Sinner and HBO’s Girls. Movie roles included Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and It Comes at Night. This series marks Clooney’s first return to TV since his days as Dr. Ross on E.R.

The six episodes were co-written and executive produced by Luke Davies and David Michod. Clooney and his partner Grant Heslov will share in the EP duties as well as sit in the director’s chair.

Catch 22 was depicted as a film in 1970 co-starring Alan Arkin and Martin Balsam. The Hulu adaptation series has not yet been given a release date.
