Geena Davis has shown confusion over the sudden cancellation of her show.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress said that nobody in the cast was given an explanation as to why the show was not being renewed for a second season.
The Boroughs has been a hit, ranking at number one on Netflix and number 2 out of all streaming originals. “Honestly, I don’t know what happened. I think it’s probably rare for a show to not get picked up and to have it announced that it’s not being picked up while it’s still in the top 10.” Davis said.
Despite her confusion about the cancellation of the show, Davis still believes that one season is all the show needed to complete its story in a satisfying way.
“The creators told us from the beginning that the series was not going to have a cliffhanger ending to the first season,” she said. “Someone had advised them, ‘Make it its own thing. And if you come back to do another year, make that its own thing.’ And we really did. There’s a tiny hint at the end that maybe everything isn’t fixed, but it is a complete story.”
Davis also believed that making The Boroughs a limited series would have made the cancellation much easier on the cast. “We so fell in love with each other that we just wanted to keep working together.” She said.
The actress suggested a way for the cast and crew to continue working together. “I suggested that the creators write another series, a completely different story with the exact same actors and writers and crew, and we just do it again like an anthology series, right?” Davis said.
Despite her ideas, Davis is unsure if another streaming service will pick up a show that uses them. The Duffers signed a four-year deal with Paramount last summer, meaning that they are unlikely to release shows outside of Paramount+.
