HBO’s epic drama Game of Thrones, which ended its prolific run on the premium network this year, has won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The fantasy series has four other wins in the category. The accomplishment comes in tandem with an Outstanding Supporting Actor nod for Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister on the show. His fourth such award, Dinklage now owns the record for most wins in that category, passing Aaron Paul for Breaking Bad. The final season of Game of Thrones earned criticism from audiences despite earning record viewership for the series.
In their acceptance speech, GOT showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who have since departed HBO on massive overall deals with Netflix, lauded “the hardest working crews in showbusiness,” and thanked the executives behind the scenes at the network.
Joining Game of Thrones in the winner’s circle is Amazon Prime’s Fleabag, which won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series. All in all, it was an extraordinarily strong night for the British comedy, which also saw creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge walk away with Emmys for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. Season 2 episode 1 director Harry Bradbeer also took home an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for his work.
The bevy of good news for the show comes as it is coming to an end after just two seasons. In a red carpet interview, Fleabag supporting actress Sian Clifford confirmed the news, stating, “I was pushing for a third [season] until I saw that final episode, and then I just knew it was right that it ended. It just felt like the story was complete.”
“This is getting ridiculous,” Waller-Bridge joked in her acceptance speech for the Outstanding Comedy Series award, “Fleabag started as a one woman show at Edinburgh Festival in 2014, and the journey has been absolutely mental to get here.”
