‘Game of Thrones’ Author George R.R. Martin Verifies Multiple Series Spinoffs

Author of the Game of Thrones books, George R.R. Martin (Fire & Blood), announced to fans that spin offs of the popular book set turned series are in development. HBO’s Game of Thrones is based on the novel series A Song of Ice and Fire which consists of five books with one forthcoming and another planned. Via Screenrant, Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons ending in 2019, with its prequel House of Dragon already announced for a second season.

Martin appeared on BANGCAST several weeks ago in an hour and a half long talk about Game of Thrones spinoffs. With only one officially given title and the go-ahead, he stated, “…The others, not yet, but we’re still working on them.” In the four and a half years since Game of Thrones’ final episode, there has been rumors and teases of numerous spinoffs, including a pitched animated series titled The Golden Empire, a spinoff following character Jon Snow played by Kit Harington (Eternals), and a series that would trail character Corlys Velaryon played by Steve Toussaint (Shooting Dogs), titled The Sea Snake. According to Screenrant, three Game of Thrones spinoffs titled Doom of Valyria, Bloodmoon, and Flea Bottom have been passed on.

Game of Thrones follows multiple powerful families as they battle for control of the Iron Throne and power of the Seven Kingdoms. Within the series there are houses which each family belongs to including: House Targaryen, House Lannister, House Greyjoy, House Tyrell, House Baratheon, House Martell, House Arryn, House Stark, and House Tully. The series features relationships, betrayal, family, and lots of violent death scenes. The series was HBO’s most popular show of all time, with the series finale attracting 19.3 million viewers across all platforms.

HBO is already working on the release of the third live-action series in the Game of Thrones world titled A Knight of Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.
