The cast of HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has new addition. According to Deadline, Gabriel Luna (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D., Terminator: Dark Fate) will join the series based on the popular PlayStation video game franchise. He joins previously announced cast members, Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Wonder Woman 1984) and Bella Ramsey (His Dark Materials, Game of Thrones).
According to Deadline, Luna will play Tommy, the younger brother to lead Pascal’s, Joel. The two siblings will be survivors of an America 20 years after an apocalyptic-level event ruined modern civilization. Joel is entrusted to transport a young girl, Ramsey’s Ellie, from a militarized zone. As they trek across the country’s desolate terrain, a simple mission becomes a battle of life and death. Luna’s Tommy is a former soldier who still has hope within humanity, faithful the country will someday rebuild. Pascal’s Joel is more hardened from the experience with a more somber, realistic perspective of the future.
Deadline reports HBO’s Chernobyl creator, Craig Mazin (Superhero Movie, Scriptnotes), will write the series with video game writer, Neil Druckmann (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, The Last of Us: Left Behind). They both are attached as executive producers. Additional executive producers include Naughty Dog president Evan Wells (Jax 3, Gex: Enter the Gecko) and PlayStation Production’s Asad Quizilbash (inFAMOUS, LittleBigPlanet) and Carter Swan (Twisted Metal, Ghost of Tsushima). Carolyn Strauss (Six Feet Under, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Rose Lam (The Firm, Reefer Madness) are also executive producers. Kantemier Bagalov (Beanpole, Closeness) will direct the pilot.
The show is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions via Deadline. Game developer Naughty Dog will also executive produce along with imprints Word Games and The Mighty Mint.
Season one of the series is said to focus on the first installment of The Last of Us, which was released in 2013. The game’s sequel, The Last of Us Part II, was released in June of 2020. PlayStation recently announced a remake of the first entry for its latest console, the PlayStation 5.
