According to Variety, FX’s Pose has been renewed for a third season after the record-breaking premiere of season two. Season one had similar success, but not like this, season one was renewed six episodes into an eight episode season. The season premiere garnered 1.2 million total viewers, with 572,000 among adults 18-49, a series high. When you calculate the additional digital and delayed viewings, the show earned 1.8 million viewers in its first five days.
Pose follows the iconic underground house ballroom culture of New York that began in the late 1980s. Some of the themes explored include the community going mainstream as well as the burgeoning AIDS epidemic. Deadline reports, season two leaps into 1990 as the ballroom community makes a name for itself in the mainstream. While the House of Evangelista is forced to reevaluate their goals under these new circumstances, the AIDS crisis continues to deteriorate and the reaction from a small group of activists comes to a head. Another, lighter thing noticeable to viewers this season, how Madonna’s “Vogue” impacted the ballroom community.
FX chairman John Landgraf says, “Pose has elevated our culture and the TV landscape like few shows before it, and we are honored to partner with co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals on third season.” Though FX is now owned by Disney, the channel does not air anything you would want your Pixar-watching pips to see. Pose is part of a budding schedule of scripted originals situated between others like Atlanta, Better Things, Baskets, Fargo, Mr. Inbetween, Mayans, Snowfall, What We Do in the Shadows and the upcoming Breeders, Mrs. America, Devs, Y: The Last Man, and Showgun, an untitled Lil Dicky comedy. Landgraf wants to double the amount of scripted originals on FX from 14 in 2018 to about 28 in around three to five years.
The show is often highly praised for its authentic casting of LGBT actors and in fact boasts the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles ever in addition to holding the title for largest recurring cast of LGBT actors ever for a scripted series. The cast includes cast includes Mj Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross, who co-star alongside Billy Porter, Charlayne Woodard, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Dyllón Burnside, Angel Bismark Curiel and Sandra Bernhard. Further, The Hollywood Reporter’s chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg applauded the show’s decision to focus more on the LGBT leads as opposed to stars Evan Peters, Kate Mara and James Van Der Beek.
The series has been showered with accolades in the one year it has been on the air. The series’ first season was named the AFI TV Program of the Year, while also winning a Peabody Award, a Television Academy Honors Award, a Writers Guild of America nomination, and two Golden Globe nominations.
