Full House star Jodie Sweetin was forcefully shoved to the ground by a Los Angeles Police Department officer Saturday during a pro-choice protest, according to Deadline. Sweetin was protesting, alongside a larger group of marchers, against the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade – the 1973 landmark precedent that protects women’s rights to an abortion.
The footage showed Sweetin, who is most well-known for her role as Stephanie Tanner in the 1987 classic sitcom Full House, and its 2016 spinoff titled Fuller House, being knocked to the ground as she made attempts to lead protesters off the highway alongside a freeway exit that protesters blocked. Sweetin subsequently released a statement, hoping to curb attention away from this “minor incident of police brutality” and towards the pro-choice marches occurring across the country protesting the Supreme Court’s decision.
“I think people are shocked when they see Stephanie Tanner, something happen to her, it makes it more real, and I hate that,” Sweetin said, via Deadline. “I hate that it takes people knowing someone or someone they recognize for people to be outraged or to take action.”
“Above all, I want to continue to not make this about me and continue to bring the focus back to women’s rights and also police brutality,” she continued. “If people are disturbed by what they saw, I want to tell you, I’ve spent a lot of time protesting out in the streets and that was a very minor incident of police brutality.”
