Freeform’s ‘Shadowhunters’ Renewed For Third Season

With a couple months left until its midseason premiere, the cast of Freeform’s Shadowhunters revealed that the series will be getting a third installment. The news broke via the program’s official Facebook page in live video on Friday, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Based on Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments, Shadowhunters tells the story of art student turned heroine Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) as she comes to terms with her status as a mortal with the blood of angels. In a quest to save her mother from dark forces, Clary meets other supernatural youths and further develops her substantial mystical abilities.

The series also stars Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, and Emeraude Toubla and is a product of Constantin Film. Smallville showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer serve the same role on Shadowhunters. Though originally intended to be a feature length film series, producers saw the potential of turning Clare’s novels into a serialized television fantasy/drama.

The midseason finale back in March raised a great deal of questions following an epic showdown in New York City. A clash between the eponymous Shadowhunters and their nemeses has caused further chaos, and a mysterious figure in black might be in possession of a powerful artifact. In their announcement, the cast hints at future narratives for the series, as well as introduce Will Tudor (Game of Thrones) in his role as a new member of Clary’s team.

Shadowhunters returns to Freeform June 5 to wrap up its second season. Details on Season 3 are still few and far between, but fans can take heart that their favorite show will live to hunt again.
