As we get closer to Gotham’s fifth and final premiere date on January 3, there has been some excitement and new changes to the show as they plan to go out with a bang. Costume changes, storylines, and character development are just the latest topics in a discussion for the series.
“Sometimes we’ve had so much plot that we had to squeeze out some of the character stuff and now that it’s the last chance we have to be with these characters, we’re letting them live in these moments,” said executive producer John Stephens. “And we’re letting the comedy really play again which comes from the characters.”
One of the characters Stephens is talking about is Jeremiah (Cameron Monaghan) who is last seen blowing up bridges. “We’re seeing development in Jeremiah’s personality and temperament,” Monaghan teases. “He’s still very intelligent, a genius, but his genius is now obsessive in weird places. He’s slipping in his sanity. The majority of his plotline this season is his strange in his mind ‘friendship’ with Bruce. It’s this last little glimpse of his vulnerability and humanity within his relationship with Bruce.”
Gotham is a prequel to Batman in which we see how the hero comes about. Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) will finally become the vigilante this season after long, tough journey. “We’re telling the long-term story of the city that created Batman so we want to feel like that story came to a satisfying end,” Stephens says.
Mazouz can understand how frustrating it has been to see only a little of Bruce’s development but it will finally pay off after some well-deserved patience. “The training of Batman takes a back seat a lot this season because there is so much going on, so much action – we really do fit 22 episodes’ worth of action and story into these last episodes,” Mazouz teases. “But you will see a fully-formed Batman, I just can’t tell you how or when or why. You will see one.”
