Fox Picks Up ‘Lethal Weapon’ for a Full Season

Another freshman series has been given a full season pickup. Deadline confirmed that Lethal Weapon, Fox’s remake of the popular movie franchise, has had five additional episodes ordered, bringing its total episode count for the first season up to 18.

Lethal Weapon delivers an explosive and wildly entertaining core relationship between two cops, with dynamic performances by Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford, surrounded by cinematic action, endearing humor and true heart. Matt Miller, McG, Dan Lin and Jennifer Gwartz have done a tremendous job on this show, which has proven to be a self-starter and solid companion for Empire,” Fox Entertainment President David Madden said.

The show, which stars Wayans Sr. as Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover in the film franchise) and Crawford as Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson in the film franchise), has been a solid performer in the leadoff spot on Wednesday nights. The most recent episode, which aired on Oct. 12, scored a 1.9 in the 18-49 demographic and was watched by 6.84 million viewers, according to TV by the Numbers. Overall this season, the show is averaging a 1.95, which is a decent number for a first year show.

The show also does well in delayed viewing, as the rating grows to a 3.2 when the live + 7 day viewing is taken into account. The strong performance in delayed viewing is good for the show, as Fox puts more of a emphasis on a show’s live + 7 day viewing when marketing to advertisers and deciding to renew or cancel a show.

Lethal Weapon is Fox’s number one new show of the season. It’s also Fox’s highest rated fall premiere show in two years. There hasn’t been much of a ratings slide in the episodes that have aired so far (2.2 rating in the premiere, 2.0 in the second episode, 1.7 in the third episode and 1.9 in the fourth episode), which is something that Fox is looking for, when some of its other new shows of the season, like Pitch, haven’t performed as well as was originally expected.

Two other veteran Fox shows, Rosewood and Scream Queens, are both experiencing a sophomore slump, with Rosewood‘s possibly being because it got moved from its post-Empire spot this season and is competing against Grey’s AnatomyScream Queens is also having tough timeslot competition, as it airs at the same time as This Is Us and Bull, with one show winning the timeslot in terms of having the higher demographic rating (This Is Us) and the other show having the higher number of people watching the episode (Bull).

Lethal Weapon airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m.
