Fox Orders New Sci-Fi Series from Seth MacFarlane

Yet another Seth MacFarlane series is in the works at Fox.

Variety reports that the network has given a 13 episode straight-to-series order for MacFarlane’s latest project. While MacFarlane is perhaps best known for his voice acting in Family Guy, his new series he will be starring in is live-action.

The title-less show will feature hour-long episodes about the crew of the spaceship named the Orville. The series is set 300 years in the future and follows the odd-ball crew of explorers and their adventures aboard a ship that sounds about as fully-functioning as the crew.

The production for the pilot episode is set to begin later this year. Aside from creating and starring in the show, MacFarlane will also executive produce.

“I’ve wanted to do something like this show ever since I was a kid, and the timing finally feels right,” said MacFarlane. “20th and Fox have been good to me for many years, and of course, Dana and Gary have been fantastic bosses and true pals, so it was a no-brainer to come to them with the project. I think this is gonna be something special.”

About the series, Fox Television Group CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden said, “For almost two decades, we’ve enjoyed an incredible collaboration with our partner and friend Seth MacFarlane. He’s one of the smartest, funniest and most talented people we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with – a great guy who’s also had such an impact on both television and popular culture. Seth has one of the most original voices – in every sense of the word – and we’ve been waiting for him to bring us a project as special as this one. It’s classic Seth – fresh and funny, incredibly smart, wickedly subversive and undeniably Fox.”

MacFarlane is best known for the creation of and voice acting in Family Guy on Fox. He also created both American Dad and The Cleveland Show, both animated comedy series. MacFarlane has also appeared physically on camera, namely in A Million Ways to Die in the West in 2014, which he wrote and starred in.

The upcoming Sci-Fi comedy is expected to premiere during the 2016-2017 TV season.
