‘Forky Asks A Question’ Wins First-Ever Emmy For Pixar

Disney-owned Pixar Animation Studios won their first-ever Emmy on the fourth night of this year’s Emmy Awards. The Disney+ series Forky Asks A Question won the Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program, as Deadline confirmed.

Forky Asks A Question was Pixar’s first original project for the Disney+ streaming service. The short-form series follows the character Forky from 2019’s Toy Story 4, played by Tony Hale (known for his role as Buster Bluth on Arrested Development). Each episode of the series features a character from the Toy Story franchise answering a question the newborn toy Forky has about the world. Each question is the title of an episode, ranging from What is Money to What is Cheese to What is Love. The later episode won last night’s Emmy, beating out Cartoon Network’s Robot Chicken and Steven Universe Future. This is the third Disney production to win in this category. Prep & Landing: Operation Secret Santa and the 2013 series of Mickey Mouse shorts won in 2011 and 2014, respectively.

Forky Asks A Question is written and directed by Bob Peterson (Up) and produced by Mark Nielsen, who also produced Toy Story 4. In a pre-recorded acceptance speech later posted in Deadline‘s article, Nielsen told audiences that “Bob and I partnered with a crew of Pixar’s best and brightest, so we share this with everyone at Team Forky Shorts, along with everyone at Disney+.” The series is the first television series to be made by Pixar. The previous Toy Story television spin-off, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, was animated by a separate studio.

Disney+ has seen a series of wins during the first nights of the Emmy Awards. Disney+ flagship series The Mandalorian won several awards, including cinematography, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and production design. Forky Asks A Question, and the rest of the Toy Story franchise, are available to watch on Disney+.
