By now, Marvel fans far and wide have tuned in to watch the premiere of Disney+’s latest series, Loki. And according to Comicbook.com, the new series has revelations that shift the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to unfathoble heights. Entitled “Glorious Purpose,” the debut episode revealed how insignificant both Loki, and the precious Infinity Stones, actually are in the grand future of the MCU.
***SPOILERS FOR EPISODE ONE OF LOKI BELOW***
Loki stars Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager, Kong: Skull Island) reprising his role as the God of Mischief, Asgard’s adopted son. Given his unfortunate demise in the beginning of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, this series picks up from a few years back on the timeline. Viewers follow Thor’s stepbrother from 2012, specifically the moment he stole the Tesseract in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. It is this crime against time that finds Loki a prisoner of the Time Variant Authority (TVA), an organization that checks and balances the main reel of time.
Once in the TVA’s custody, Loki appears unfazed by the charges they’ve brought against him: altering the main timeline and inadvertently creating a dangerous nexus event. Determined to repossess the blue stone that controls space, Loki masterfully alludes both his controller, played by Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Wonder) and a fellow TVA officer, portrayed by Wunmi Mosaku (Luther, Lovecraft Country). Finally loose he apprehends the Tesseract, only to be reminded that magic does not work inside the TVA. Loki is dumbfounded to discover a dum pile of Infinity Stones have been collected by various TVA employees. Most of them discarded or used as decorative paperweights.
According to Comicbook.com, this discovery repels all we’ve come to know and understand about the MCU. The first three phases – a decade worth of films – were rooted in the massive power of those six stones. Their origins outdated human existence. Their scorcery surpassed mere understanding, awakening Chaos Magic in a Sokovian orphan; giving sentient beings a soul; and, when combined, vanquishing half of all living beings in the universe.
In this moment, Loki realizes he has wasted his life chasing a false deity in comparison to the TVA. And only Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige knows what greater power has yet to be unleashed.
