Final Season of ‘Mr. Robot’ Gets a Trailer and a Release Date

Mr. Robot, USA Network’s hit hacker drama, will begin its final chapter on October 6. The series, which will be ending after its fourth season, follows the struggles of rogue hacker Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) as he fights the corrupt corporate elite that secretly runs the world. Along the way, he stumbles upon greater conspiracies than he could have imagined, including a covert digital war being waged by the China’s shadowy “Dark Army.” All the while, he is both plagued and aided by Mr. Robot (Christian Slater), his alter ego resulting from a split personality disorder.

The newly released trailer begins with images of Christmas time in New York, set to a haunting rendition of Silent Night. It then proceeds to depict a bloody escalation of the show’s geopolitical cyber war. Elliot is heard saying “we need to get back to work” before the trailer cuts to a montage featuring a crime scene, a hand feverishly scribbling “they’re listening,” Elliot being restrained by two men, and an unknown man who seems to have been shot. All the while, Mr. Robot is heard expressing concern over Elliot’s actions, insisting, “This is an endless war. What you’re about to do is crossing a line.”

The final shot sees Elliot standing next to Mr. Robot behind a sea of flames. Elliot responds to his mental projection, “It’s a little late for that, don’t you think?”

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, creator and showrunner Sam Esmail detailed the decision to end Mr. Robot at four seasons despite its successful run, stating, “When we went into the writers’ room for the fourth season, I put the last two episodes on the board because I always knew what the last two were, and I said, ‘Here’s where we are from the end of season three, how many more episodes are there without treading water?’ Everyone had thought, ‘Oh, we definitely have two more seasons left.’ But there weren’t. It was basically one last season [worth of material].”

Mr. Robot has brought a bounty of new opportunities for both Esmail and star Rami Malek. Since the show’s debut, the former has created Amazon’s Homecoming and signed massive overall deal with Universal Content Productions. In a shift to film, Malek became a breakout star as Freddie Mercury in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. He won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for that performance.

Mr. Robot will begin its fourth and final season on USA on Sunday, October 6.
