Fan-Favorite ‘Spawn’ Characters, Sam and Twitch, Set to Get Their Own Series

Wiip, the company that developed the HBO Max hit Mare of Eastown, will not rest on their laurels. Fresh off the season finale of the Kate Winslet-led drama, the independent studio has announced their intentions to develop a show based on the famous comic book series, Spawn.

Via Deadline, the studio, Wiip, has begun the early stages in producing a program centering around two of the most famous characters in the series, detectives Sam Burke and “Twitch” Williams. The two NYPD homicide detectives were so popular that they were given their own comic book spin-off, Sam and Twitch, in 1999 where they deal with the criminal infestation in the grimy city. These fan-favorites are part of the reason that Spawn recently was given the Guiness World Record for the longest running creator-owned comic.

The two characters’ creator and author of the entire series, Todd McFarlane, will wear two caps in the project as director-producer. Alongside him as executive producers are Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzenberg (Condor) who are also tasked with adapting the project.

McFarlane is not new to the television industry. He already has racked up an Emmy and a Grammy for the trophy case. He has also worked as the artist for the Amazing Spider-Man and helped co-create the antihero Venom. Both these characters have spawned multi-verses for Sony and Marvel which should help with Sam and Twitch.

In a statement obtained by Deadline, McFarlane, who is also the co-founder and President of Image Comics, the largest comic producer behind Marvel and DC, said, “The addition of Wiip and the creative writing skills of Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzenberg make for a very compelling team that we all hope leads to the entertaining show we know this can be. If you like cool, moody, creepy, odd crime stories, this will be your cup of tea!”
