Fabien Frankel Joins HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel ‘House of the Dragon’

As Game of Thrones celebrates the tenth anniversary of the series’ premiere, House Targaryen continues to grow. Fabien Frankel (Last Christmas) has officially been cast in a major role in the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, via Deadline.

Set 300 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will focus on Daenerys’ ancestors as they establish House Targaryen. According to Deadline, the prequel series will be based on the events of George R. R. Martin’s (author, A Song of Ice and Fire book series), Fire & Blood, which details the history of the house, including its most important genealogies.

Frankel is currently attached to play Ser Criston Cole, a Dornish commoner, who’s father is the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven, via Deadline. Although Ser Cole is without land, title, or power, he does posses a great deal of honor and swordsmanship capabilities beyond that of the average knight.

House of the Dragon is set to have five major characters including King Viserys Targaryen, Alicent Hightower, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Prince Daemon Targaryen, and Lord Corlys Velaryon. According to Deadline, the roles will be played by Paddy Considine (The World’s End), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Matt Smith (Doctor Who) respectively.

Currently intended to premiere sometime in 2022, House of the Dragon was co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal (writer, Rampage). According to Deadline, Condal has written the pilot script for the series. Miguel Sapochnik (director, Game of Thrones) will return to the Game of Thrones universe as a director for the pilot episode in addition to other episodes. Additionally, Condal and Sapochnik are attached to the series as co-showrunners. The show is set to be a ten episode series. Additional seasons of the series have not been officially confirmed.
