As a part of this weekend’s virtual convention DC Fandome, HBO Max confirmed that Doom Patrol will be returning for a third season. The superhero-misfit show’s third season will premiere in 2021, Deadline reported today.
Doom Patrol follows an eclectic team of superheroes with a variety of strange powers. Diane Guerrero (Orange is the New Black) stars as Jane, a woman with 64 separate identities that emerged as a result of childhood trauma and who gained superpowers after illicit experiments. Larry Trainer, voiced by Matt Bomer (American Horror Story) and portrayed by Matthew Zuk (Greyhound), was an Air Force pilot whose body mutated due to exposure to radioactivity in the atmosphere. Similarly, the character Cliff Steele is voiced by Brendan Fraiser (The Mummy) and portrayed by Riley Shanahan (Legends of Tomorrow). Steele was a NASCAR driver forced into a robotic body after a horrific crash. April Bowlby (Two and a Half Men) plays Rita Farr, a former actress who can transform her body into any shape after exposure to toxic gas. Jovian Wade (Big School) is Cyborg, the final member of the Doom Patrol team, a teenager with cybernetic enhancements due to an accident in his childhood.
The series follows the team as they try to save the Chief (Timothy Dalton, The Rocketeer), the medical doctor who saved their lives and gathered them together as a team, after he was kidnapped by the mysterious Mr. Nobody (Alan Tudyk, Frozen). Doom Patrol premiered on DC Universe as an original series on February 15th, 2019. The series was a critical success, acclaimed for exploring themes many superhero shows do not, such as collective trauma. The second season premiered on June 25th 2020 on two different platforms – DC Universe and HBO Max.
This third season will be exclusive to HBO Max. Speaking with Deadline, head of original content on HBO Max Sarah Aubrey said that “Doom Patrol came to HBO Max with an already deep and passionate fan base and has risen to the top as one of the most-watched Max Originals on the platform. The series sits well in our portfolio and we are glad to greenlight a third season to continue this distinctive style of storytelling that resonates so well with critics and fans alike.”
