Donald Sutherland Cast As J. Paul Getty For FX’s ‘Trust’

FX’s Trust has found its shrewd negotiator.

Deadline reports that Donald Sutherland has been cast in the upcoming anthology series as the notoriously frugal oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. Season 1 of Trust, written by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold) and directed by frequent collaborator Danny Boyle, will focus on the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III.

In July of 1973, the young and rebellious John Paul Getty III was kidnapped off the streets of Rome and held for a multimillion-dollar ransom. Getty III’s grandfather, billionaire J. Paul Getty Sr. (Sutherland), at first refused to pay the ransom. Getty Sr. eventually negotiated the kidnappers down from $17 million to $2.2 million, the maximum tax deductible amount.

Sutherland has worked extensively in both film and television, known for projects ranging from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Don’t Look Now to The Hunger Games series. Sutherland is currently starring on Audience’s Ice, a drama about crime surrounding the diamond business. Sutherland also starred alongside William Fichtner and Tom Wlaschiha in the German-French-Italian-American co-production Crossing Lines. The series, which premiered on NBC in the US before moving to Netflix, focused on the International Criminal Court’s special crime unit as they investigated crimes that crossed into various countries.

Trust comes from FX Productions, Cloud Eight Films, Decibel Films and Snicket Films Limited. The 10-episode first season is set to begin production in London in June and is scheduled for a January 2018 premiere. The series is executive produced by Beaufoy, Boyle and Christian Colson.
