‘Documentary Now!’ Gets Two More Seasons Before The Series Premiere

IFC has a lot of faith in their new Documentary Now! series that just received two more seasons before the show premieres.

The series from Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Seth Meyers is a spoof of documentaries. Each episode in the planned six-episode first season is meant to spoof a different style of documentary from a different era. Hader and Armisen will star in the series but Meyers will not appear on screen. The series is hosted by Helen Mirren who introduces the documentary of the week.

The first season of the show is set to premiere on August 20 on IFC. Before the show even airs, IFC has ordered two more seasons of the spoof, according to The Hollywood Reporter

“This two-season renewal ahead of the show’s initial debut is a huge nod to the creative and comedic genius of Fred, Bill and Seth,” said IFC president Jennifer Caserta in a statement. “We’re immensely proud of what they’ve created alongside [producer] Rhys [Thomas], and thrilled with the buzz and critical acclaim the show is already receiving.”

This is a first for IFC who has never renewed a show before its premiere. In addition to a guaranteed two more seasons, the show will also have a surprise seventh episode in the first season.

In addition to Thomas, the show is executive produced by Broadway Video’s Andrew Singer. SNL’s Thomas and Alex Buono will direct the series. SNL‘s John Mulaney and Erik Kenward serve as consulting producer and supervising producer respectively.

We reported earlier here, that the second episode of the series was available to view online ahead of the show’s premiere. The episode is a spoof on VICE journalism and is about reporters investigating dangerous cartels in Mexico all while ignoring the advice of the people around them.
