An update has arisen concerning the future for the renowned sci-fi series, Doctor Who, the science fiction drama series starring Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) as the titled character. According to Screenrant, it was confirmed by a spokesperson within BBC that has stated that the series was never canceled as it simply went on hiatus due to a major low rating with its recent episodes.
The show’s spokesperson goes on to clarify in an interview with Screenrant, “ This story is incorrect, Doctor Who has not been shelved. As we have previously stated, the decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs.”
They continue, “The deal with Disney Plus was for 26 episodes – and exactly half of those still have to transmit. And as for the rest, we never comment on the Doctor and future storylines.”
According to Screenrant, the statement shows that Ncuti’s journey as the Doctor is not over yet, as some mysteries have yet to be solved such as with his new companion Ruby Sunday, portrayed by Millie Gibson (Tales of the TARDIS), whose mother remains unknown and whenever in danger, snow begins to appear. New seasons could also introduce new characters within the iconic franchise such as Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu (Jurassic World Dominion) and many more to come.
According to a mxdwn post, teaser footage has already been released and showcased the future journey and enemies that the Doctor and his companions will encounter.
While the future of Doctor Who beyond the Disney+ deal remains uncertain, the show is not in immediate danger of cancellation. Season 15 is already in production and a potential 16th season as well, which will showcase the same crazy adventure throughout time and space that has made the show popular through viewers worldwide. The current season of the popular sci-fi series is available to stream on Disney+, with older seasons available on BBC iPlayer platform.
