Comicbook reports that Disney Branded Television and BBC recently unveiled fresh insights into the upcoming season of Doctor Who. This exciting batch of episodes, featuring Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education, Barbie) as the Fifteenth Doctor, will mark a groundbreaking moment as the first season to debut simultaneously on both Disney+ and the BBC. The highly anticipated season premiere is scheduled for Friday, May 10th, at 7pm ET on Disney+, featuring a captivating two-episode premiere. Subsequently, the episodes will be accessible on BBC iPlayer starting Saturday, May 11th, at 12am GMT, followed by a broadcast premiere on BBC One later the same day.
Moreover, Disney+ has unveiled a fresh piece of promotional artwork commemorating the return of Doctor Who. This artwork showcases Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal of the Fifteenth Doctor alongside the latest companion, Millie Gibson’s (Coronation Street, Jamie Johnson) character, Ruby Sunday.
What Does The New Season Of Doctor Who Have To Offer?
In this season of Doctor Who, viewers follow the Doctor and Ruby Sunday as they embark on boundless adventures across time and space aboard the TARDIS. Their journeys take them from the Regency era in England to dystopian futures, where they fight for justice while encountering remarkable allies and formidable adversaries.
“At last, it’s my great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby’s adventures together,” said showrunner, executive producer, and writer Russell T. Davies (Queer as Folk, Bob & Rose). “Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries! And a terrifying secret that’s been spanning time and space for decades. Don’t miss a second!”
Who Comprises The Cast Of Doctor Who?
The upcoming season of Doctor Who will feature guest appearances from Aneurin Barnard (Hunky Dory, The Truth About Emanuel), Anita Dobson (EastEnders, Split Ends), Yasmin Finney (Heartstopper, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK), Michelle Greenidge (After Life, Mandy), Jonathan Groff (Taking Woodstock, Glee), Bonnie Langford (Just William, EastEnders), Genesis Lynea (Casualty, Silent Witness), Jemma Redgrave (Bramwell, Howards End), Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable?, Dodger), Indira Varma (The Canterbury Tales, Game of Thrones), and Angela Wynter (EastEnders, Doctors).
Doctor Who is produced by Bad Wolf in collaboration with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and BBC. Spearheaded by Davies’ creative direction, the executive producer team also comprises Phil Collinson (Peak Practice, Coronation Street), Joel Collins (His Dark Materials, Black Mirror), Julie Gardner (Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures), and Jane Tranter (Succession, The Night Of). The new season showcases episodes helmed by directors Ben Chessell (Offspring, Rush), Jamie Donoughue (To Kill a Mockumentary, Stop It, You’re Killing Me), Julie Anne Robinson (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Scandal), and Dylan Holmes Williams (The Devil’s Harmony, Stilts).
Who Is Taking On The Role Of Doctor Who?
Ncuti Gatwa was revealed as The Doctor in May 2022. He premiered in the character’s role in the third 60th Anniversary special, titled The Giggle, last autumn.
“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,” Gatwa explained previously. “A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”
As previously noted, Doctor Who is set to make its return with fresh episodes on Friday, May 10th, at 7pm ET on Disney+, featuring a two-episode premiere. Subsequently, the show will debut on BBC iPlayer on Saturday, May 11th, at 12am GMT, followed by a broadcast premiere on BBC One later the same day.
