Earlier today, the popular British sci-fi time travel show Doctor Who released a new trailer for the upcoming 12th season. The trailer features aliens, action, and of course the titular Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker.
In addition to many new stories, season 12 of Doctor Who will see many new faces joining the cast as series regulars or guest stars. Some notable additions include Goran Višnjić of ER, Robert Glenister of Paranoid, Stephen Fry of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Lenny Henry of Broadchurch. In a report from Deadline, both Glenister and Višnjić expressed their excitement to be joining the cast. “I’ve always been a huge fan of Doctor Who, so when the offer to play one of my favorite people in history came, it made me so happy to be part of the show and it turned into this awesome, dream job!” Višnjić commented. Glenister added, “I first appeared in Doctor Who in ‘The Caves of Androzani’ at the tender age of 24 in 1984. Thirty-five years later, I got to be in it again at the not-so-tender age of nearly 60. How time flies!”
Beyond the announced guest stars, all eyes for the new season will be on Jodie Whittaker as she continues into her second season of playing the Doctor. Whittaker made headlines last year after it was announced that she would be taking over the role from the previous actor, Peter Capaldi, making her the first female Doctor in the show’s 55-year run. During this time, Whittaker was also very vocal about advocating for equal pay among actors and closing the gender wage gap: “I absolutely know I am not being paid less than any other Doctor… This show is not the show that’s going to do that and have that revelation be the sidebar.”
Season 12 of Doctor Who comes out in early 2020 on the BBC, though no official release date has been announced yet. You can watch the trailer for the new series above.
