If you blinked during the Disney Plus Day sizzle reel this past Friday, you may have missed the first look of the Marvel series, Ms. Marvel. In case you did, Polygon has the short tease of Kamala Khan, the teen heroine who is being portrayed on screen for the first time by upcoming actress, Iman Vellani. Check the teaser video below.
Heralding from Jersey City, Kamala is a young teen obsessed with superheroes, specifically her role model, Captain Marvel. Now at the age where she’s seeking to establish herself as an individual, her journey becomes further compounded when she discovers she has more in common with her heroic idol than she could ever imagine. Honing the ability to stretch and grow her body to extreme lengths, Kamala has another persona she must add to the balancing act.
The teaser mostly features Vellani and Matt Lintz (Pixels, The Alienist) who plays her best friend, Bruno Carelli. Ms. Marvel will also feature Mohan Kapoor (Coffee Bloom, Manjha) and Zenobia Shroff (The Big Sick, When Harry Tries to Marry) as Kamala’s parents, Yusuf and Muneeba Khan, respectively; Saagar Shaikh (Remember Mike) as her brother, Amir; Laurel Marsden (Survive) as Zoe Zimmer; Rish Shah (To All the Boys: Always and Forever, The Long Goodbye) as Kamran; and, Aramis Knight (Runt, Into the Badlands) as Kareem aka Red Dagger.
According to Polygon, Ms. Marvel debuted in 2013 from co-editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker. The duo was joined by writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona. The fourth character to carry the moniker, Kamala’s Ms. Marvel debuted in Captain Marvel #14. By the following year, she landed her own solo comic series, Marvel’s first Muslim character to do so.
Originally set to premiere at the end of this year, Ms. Marvel will now debut in the fall of 2022 following the premieres of Moon Knight and She-Hulk. Ms. Marvel is helmed by lead writer Bisha K. Ali, also known for her work on Hulu’s Four Weddings and Funeral and Netflix’s Sex Education. Her directing team is led by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah who shot to fame for their film, 2020’s blockbuster hit, Bad Boys for Life. The pair will soon direct Warner Bros. Batgirl feature for HBO Max. Additional directors include Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Saving Face, Sitara: Let Girls Dream) and Meera Menon (Equity, Farah Goes Bang).
