Disney+ has released a new trailer for its upcoming holiday series, The Santa Clauses, that will stream exclusively on the platform, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series is a continuation of the Santa Clause movie trilogy starring Tim Allen (Last Man Standing, Toy Story) who will reprise his role as Scott Calvin aka Santa Claus.
The franchise started in 1994 with the original film Santa Clause, in which Scott Calvin becomes Santa Claus after accidentally scaring his predecessor and making him fall off the roof. The second Santa Clause movie came out in 2002 and, in this movie, Santa has to find a wife, and he meets the future Mrs. Claus, Carol played by Elizabeth Mitchell (Outer Banks, First Kill). The last installment in the Santa Clause franchise is Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause in which we are shown how being Santa has affected Scott and Carol’s life and the start of their family. This movie also introduces the famous villain Jack Frost played by Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building, The Morning Show).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Santa Clauses will focus on Scott deciding that after thirty years of being Santa, he wants to retire. He makes this decision to leave the Santa responsibilities behind amid the declining popularity of the holiday. This leads him to move himself and his family back to the human world. While the family tries to adapt to life outside of the North Pole, elves start vanishing from existence.
Calvin also chooses his successor before leaving but soon realizes that his successor is not the right person for the job. Because instead of trying to save Christmas, he is destroying it. This will lead Scott and his family to try to right his wrongs and try to save Christmas.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the limited series will include Scott and Carol’s children Buddy played by Austin Kane (The Burned Photo, Spirit Riding Free), and his sister Sandra played by Elizabeth Allen-Dick. A beloved character from the first two movies is reprising his role in this series. David Krumholtz (The Lamb, The Deuce) is returning to play the elf Bernard, one of Santa’s helpers at the North Pole during his first years as Santa.
