Disney+ Revs Up Its ‘Star Wars’ Series’ Adaptations

Disney+, the upcoming streaming service from Disney itself, has just approved the production of two new series set in the Star Wars universe based the feature film and prequel Rogue One and the origin story of bounty hunter Boba Fett. Lucasfilm will produce both series while production has been slated to begin next year.

The Americans executive producer Stephen Schiff will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the live-action series which will be lead by actor Diego Luna as he reprises his role as Cassian Andor. Writer Jared Bush (Moana) formulated the original concept behind the project’s premise and also wrote the pilot’s script and series’ bible.

Per StarWars.com, Luna has been quoted saying, “Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”

Actor and Iron Man Director Jon Favreau will be ushering in Disney+’s second Star Wars series titled The Mandalorian. An origin story that will follow the very same warrior race bounty hunters Jango Fett and son Boba Fett come from.

Set after the fall of the Empire and the emergence of the First Order, it follows a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. So far, Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano and Nick Nolte are expected to star in non disclosed roles.

Fans can expect Disney+ to launch it services in late 2019, and will feature additional original content across other major Disney brands such as Pixar, Marvel and the aforementioned Star Wars. It also will incorporate programming from National Geographic, which it acquired earlier this year in a valued $71.3 billion acquisition deal of 21st Century Fox

Deadline initially reported both stories.
