Disney Plus Revives 90’s X-men Cartoon with ‘Xmen ’97’

The 1992 show X-Men: The Animated Series has been held in the highest of regards by fans. Some say it is the gold standard for all Marvel-related animated shows. Today, Disney Plus announced that they would be reviving that very cartoon with X-men ’97. Disney Plus says that the show will release sometime in 2023. According to The Wrap, the show will pick up where the original show left off after its 1997 series finale. A plethora of original cast members is slated to reprise their roles in this revival.

Original cast members returning to join the revival include Cal Dodd (Rescue Heroes: The Movie, Paw Patrol: Ready Race Rescue), Lenore Zann (Outlaw Star, Stormhawks), George Buza (A Christmas Horror Story, The Brain), Christopher Britton (Death Note, Iron Man: Armored Adventures) and many more. The new show will also be adding new voices such as Jennifer Hale (Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, Totally Spies), Anniwaa Buachie (Beyond Plain Sight, the Deafening Silence), and Ray Chase (My Hero Academia, Malignant).

Behind the scenes talent from the original has yet to sign on fully. However, writers Eric and Julia Lewald (X-Men: The Animated Series, Young Hercules) and director Larry Houston (Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Robocop Alpha Command) will consult on the new series.

The original show ran for 76 episodes from 1992 to 1997. Its popularity among mainstream fans is widely considered why 21st Century Fox made the 2000 live-action movie: X-Men. That movie is credited with starting the superhero boom of the early 2000s that would ultimately lead to creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The original five-season run of X-Men: The Animated Series is already available to stream on Disney Plus, along with other animated series from the ’90s based on Marvel superheroes like Spider-Man and The Fantastic Four.

Other Marvel shows have been announced along with this one today. Some live-action such as Agatha: House of Harkness and Echo; while others are also animated like Spiderman: Freshman Year and Marvel Zombies.
