Get’cha heads in the game, Wildcats! Season two of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is just over a month away from premiering on Disney+. The first trailer for the second season, which is set to release on Friday, May 14, dropped on Disney’s YouTube channel, via Yahoo! Entertainment.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series follows the students of the real East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah as they face the trials and tribulations of relationships, calculus, and putting on a school musical based on the first High School Musical film. The mockumentary series was one of the first Disney+ Originals, as its first two episodes preimiered November 12, 2019, the day the streaming platform launched.
Now, a year and a half later, we’re returning to East High for the spring musical. According to Yahoo! Entertainment, the theatre students prepare to perform a musical version of High School Musical 2 when Miss Jenn (played by Kate Reinders, Work It) decides to instead adapt Beauty and the Beast to compete with a rival drama department at North High School.
The second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series also finds the series’ leads Ricky (played by Joshua Basset, Lethal Weapon) and Nini (played by Olivia Rodrigo, Bizaardvark) attempting a long-distance relationship after their season one finale reunion, via Yahoo! Entertainment. Beyond the in-show musical songs, the series is known for showcasing original songs written and performed by its cast members. According to Deadline, both Rodrigo and Basset have written songs that will be featured in the upcoming season.
According to Deadline, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is created, written, and executive produced by Tim Federle (writer, Ferdinand). In 2019, the first season of the series won a GLAAD Media Award.
