Disney Introduces First Bisexual Lead Character in ‘The Owl House’

In one of its new series, the Disney Channel is set to introduce their first lead bisexual character to the network through Luz Noceda in The Owl House, according to Deadline. Created by Dana Terrace (Gravity Falls), the animated Disney program debuted its first season on January 10 of 2020 consisting of 19 episodes. Currently, the first season is still premiering new episodes as it wraps up the first season on August 29. Despite still within its first season, the animated program has been renewed for a second season. 

The Owl House centers on Luz who has unearthed a magical portal that leads her to another universe and world as she finds new friends at the magical establishment of the Owl House. Terrace commented via Twitter on the matter of her protagonists’ sexuality as that she is bisexual and therefore she “want[ed] to write a bi character, dammit!” The decision was met with some doubts from Disney executives, yet Terrace stated that she and her decision is “VERY” supported by current Disney leadership.” Terrace elaborated on why she wanted to include a bisexual character in her animated series by explaining that she wanted her series to also allow visualization of personal experiences with sexuality. The Owl House voice cast includes the likes of Sarah-Nicole Robles (The Fosters) as Luz along with Wendie Malick (Hot in Cleveland, Scrooged) as Eda, and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) as King to round out the main cast. Additional voice cast members include the likes of Mae Whitman (Arrested Development, The DUFF), Issac Ryan Brown (Raven’s Home), JB Blanc (Peter Rabbit, Black Panther), Jorge Diaz (The Marked Ones), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), and many more.
