Disney+ Announces New Series ‘Dug Days’ To Honor International Dog Day

A beloved character from an early Pixar film is returning in a brand new series at Disney+. The House of Mouse streaming service announced Dug Days, a new show featuring the lovable canine from the 2009 film, Up. According to the Disney+ press release, the series announcement and trailer coincided with the global observance of International Dog Day. Check out the trailer below:

The new series will be comprised of five new shorts, all written, directed and acted by original voice actor, Rob Peterson (Monster’s Inc, Finding Nemo). Kim Collins (The Incredibles, Cars 3) joins the series as producer. Peterson described what viewers and fans can expect from man’s best friend as Dug will be exploring the world on his own away from home, Paradise Falls, for the first time.

“Everything is new, and he’s excited about all of it,” Peterson stated in the press release. “But the smallest things can distract Dug, never mind an actual squirrel,” Peterson said via the press release.

The actor and animator is very familiar with the material as he served as screenwriter and co-director for the Oscar-winning film which starred Ed Asner (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Elf) and Jordan Nagai (Beyond Beyond)In the original film, Asner stars as 78-year-old balloon salesman, Carl Fredricksen, who following a great loss, sets out to fulfill one of his life-long dreams. He successfully attaches a group of large balloons to his home with the goal of sailing away to South America for a life of solitude. His dream is a bit deferred when he realizes a young boy, Nagai’s Russell, has inadvertently joined the trek as a stowaway. The movie deals with grief, loneliness and the power of friendship.

Dug appeared in the film as one of legendary explorer, Charles F. Muntz’s, many pets. Muntz was voiced by the late Christopher Plummer (Knives Out, A Beautiful Mind). The film, directed by current CCO of Pixar Animation Studios, Pete Docter (Inside Out, Soul), went on to win the Academy Award for Best Feature Film in 2010.

“Dug is pure of heart—he’s a good soul. I think people enjoy that part of Dug,” Peterson said in the press release. “Plus, people love their dogs. We’ve gone to great lengths to include truth in dog behavior, so they see their own dogs in Dug.”

Fans of Up and Dug can expect to see all five episodes on Disney+ on September 1.
